2022 has been a turbulent year for the PC and console gaming market. Here are some of the key trends and events that have shaped the past year and will shape 2023 and beyond.
,
PC & Console Market Share and Performance: Revenue of PC & Consoles reached US$92.3 billion in 2022, down -2.2% year-on-year.The market may cool off post-pandemic, but overall results continue to beat our previous forecasts. We still have a long way to go to reach over 1 billion PC gamers and 611 million console gamers.
Playtime data: Average playtime decreased by 23% between 2021 and 2022 on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. We view this as a corrective move as the market stabilizes at pre-pandemic levels of activity.
Game Development and Release Trends: With the pandemic being a factor, many companies have delayed the release of their big 2022 titles until at least 2023.These delays have had a significant impact on game time and costs, although 2023 now has a tight release schedule, including big games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of a Kingdom.
Key Business Model Trends: A growing number of AAA and AA publishers are shifting their core businesses to service- and subscription-based models. We expect companies to choose fewer new releases and focus on extending the life of existing franchises over the next few years, especially following the success of titles like Fortnite, Minecraft, and ROBLOX.
Gaming and the Surrounding Media Ecosystem: While remakes and remasters have increased interest in older gaming franchises, 2022 marked a turning point for transmedia strategies. The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us was obviously a huge hit and game-booster, but it wasn’t the only example by any means.Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an anime based on the controversial title, has significantly boosted the brand’s popularity.
Detailed Computer & Console Game Demographics and Personality Analysis: In the last six months, two out of three gamers played on PC or console, and 72% of PC and/or console gamers played on two or more platforms. The market has also become more equal in 2022, with female gamers accounting for 40% of the total PC and console gamer base.
